Hannah Porter was one of our OG Starcast Students and attended Starcast most evenings. She is a triple threat who is currently in her second year studying Musical Theatre at Bird! We were lucky enough to welcome Hannah back to the Starcast Studio this October half term to deliver some incredible dance workshops in Jazz and Commercial to our current Students. Hannah also kindly answered some of our questions regarding how her time at Starcast aided her getting a place in one of Uk’s leading conservatoires.

What did you have to provide for the audition?

For Bird I had to prepare 2 songs and 2 monologues (but only ended up doing 1 each) a 1 minute dance solo and then take part in a dance class. Not many places ask you to prepare a dance solo though that’s quite rare.

What training or grades really put you in a good stead to apply?

My training at both Starcast and SDS helped me so much- having an understanding of ballet technique was a great skill but also having all my performing arts and other dance training from Starcast was hugely valuable. Getting such a wide range of dance training at Starcast was so helpful too- I feel so lucky that I got to do Commercial and Musical Theatre before coming to bird!

What does a day at Bird look like?

All my days are quite different but it’s a fairly equal balance of singing, dancing and acting. We have 10/11 dance classes a week, a few theory lessons, acting, acting through song, ensemble singing, individual singing lessons. I start at 8:30 every day and normal finish between 5:30 and 7! And accents as well!!

What’s the best part?

The best part for me is the level of training- I’m pushed by amazing teachers and people around me and it’s so inspiring. Being surrounded by people who all share the same love for performing as me is the best thing ever!!

Did Starcast aid your training or journey?

Starcast massively aided my journey, I don’t believe I would’ve got to where I am now without it. The confidence you get here to be yourself is so important, along with the diversity in the training I got helped so much. I’m so lucky that I got amazing singing, acting and a big range of dance training at Starcast!!
